Homeschool Thursday: Iron Ore and Smelting (Elementary Age Homeschoolers)
Join AMOS in welcoming Dr. Langille as she leads a class in Iron Ore and Smelting. Iron (Fe) is one of our most commonly used metals. As a basic building block for steel, we use iron in many everyday items such as automobiles, buildings, cast iron, etc. However, it rarely occurs in its purest form. Most of the time iron bonds with other elements, such as oxygen to form metallic minerals such as hematite and magnetite. We call these rocks and minerals iron ore. In this class we will discuss how iron ore can be transformed into pure native iron for industrial use by iron smelting, a process that we will also do in the class!
