Description

Homegrown: Community Cookbook & Social Gathering
February 8 l 1 – 4 pm l FREE
Blanche Ely House Museum

Food is universally at the heart of community events, ceremonies and traditions. The Ely’s understood the practical importance of developing the culinary skills of their students and made food services a part of the Home Economics curriculum. They also understood the power of food to evoke pride, build comradery and create a sense of place. As a result they incorporated food into many annual celebrations. The Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department will kick off Black History Month at the Blanche Ely House Museum with Homegrown: Recipe Exchange and Food Tasting! This community-centered project relies on community-engagement to develop a collection of recipes, stories and photographs representative of the memories and traditions that have shaped the communal practice of preparing and sharing food in Pompano’s Northwest Community. Participants will be encouraged to enjoy a tour of CEREMONY the Blanche Ely House Museum’s exhibition before networking with friends and family on the patio to sample traditional cuisines rooted in the diversity of Pompano’s cultural heritage. Collected recipes and remembrances will become the basis for a community cookbook.
