About HOME, Inc.

HOME, Inc. was founded in 1967 through the efforts of citizens concerned about the lack of decent, affordable housing. As the oldest private, non-profit housing organization in Des Moines, our mission is to create opportunities for quality, affordable housing. Study after study reports that quality, affordable housing enables people to stabilize their lives. To accomplish our mission, HOME, Inc. develops affordable housing, provides both rental and home ownership counseling and education, and homeless prevention services.

The affordable housing situation in our community is critical. We must come together to solve the affordable housing issue. A recent report indicated there is a need for 11,848 additional affordable housing units in Central Iowa. HOME, Inc. will continue to work to create new housing opportunities and provide the tools to enable people to retain and improve their housing, because when people live in safe, stable, affordable housing, the community wins.

Our Services

Housing Development program builds and rehabs affordable homes in distressed neighborhoods and provides home improvements to elderly and disabled homeowners.

Housing Counseling is a crisis oriented service that helps clients identify their immediate problem and the best option for solving the issue in order to retain/improve their housing.

Integrated Services is a case management approach to assist low income clients in developing and implementing plans to obtain and retain permanent housing.

Housing Education helps people increase housing knowledge so people make better housing decisions and prevent future problems. HOME, Inc. provides two types of educational services; homeownership and rental, in partnership with a variety of community organizations.

HOPE for Stable Families program is a homeless prevention program that helps families experiencing a housing crisis and temporary financial issues retain housing and prevent them from becoming homeless.
