Description

E naue mai e nā poʻe aloha ʻāina!

Join us Sunday September 15th for a predator fishing event at Heʻeia Fishpond to support the efforts to protect Maunakea. Pole fishing will be allowed in and out of the pond but only predator fish are allowed to be taken out of the pond. All other fish in the pond are catch and release. We need your help to bring down the predator fish population so we can make room for more herbivorous fish to grow in the pond. E ola!

Also, bring some extra cash because we will be selling a variety of foods and drinks which will also support the kiaʻi efforts on the mauna. And you never know......some side fishing bets might pop up too! Mahalo for supporting the restoration of our fishponds, loʻi, lands, oceans, and lāhui.

Here are some answers to commonly asked questions:

1) Fee - The fee is $20 PER POLE not per person. On the day of the event the walk-up fee is $25 per pole. We do not provide any poles/bait/lures, you must provide your own. Only pole fishing is allowed. One person may bring more than one pole.

2) Fishing gear - Poles (with or without reels) are allowed. No other fishing equipment is allowed. No large nets or traps. This is reef fishing so plan accordingly. Red scoop nets for the kids and buckets are okay.

3) Location - The fishing will take place along Heʻeia Fishpond wall which extends about 3/4 mile out into the ocean. Fishing is allowed both in and out of the pond. Within the pond, only predators are allowed to be catch-and-keep; all others are catch-and-release. Fishing is also allowed outside the pond but State legal limits are enforced. You may walk on the reef outside the pond but must stay on the wall when fishing inside the pond.

4) Catch - Predator fish are the only fish allowed to be taken inside the pond. ALL OTHER FISH CAUGHT MUST BE RELEASED BACK INTO THE POND. Our pond predators are Papio, Barracuda, Toau, and Tilapia. Fishing is also allowed outside the pond and State legal limits will be enforced. Everyone must fill out catch report at the end of the day. If you'd like, you can donate some of your catch to Paepae o Heʻeia and we will take it to the mauna a few weeks later to feed the kūpuna and protectors. Mahalo piha.

5) Outside Food & Drinks - As this is a fundraiser event and our staff will be preparing delicious food and have snacks available for purchase, we ask that you please kokua and not bring outside food and drinks. We encourage you to bring refillable water bottles and hydro flasks that are welcome. We will have water here for you to refill your own bottles.

6) Parking - We have limited parking on site and ask that you make that available to kupuna. Street parking is available and we ask that you please park considerately of our neigbors and do not block any driveways or mailboxes.

Mahalo!
