Event description
Holiday Reception hosted by Mrs. Chele Sachs at the Dahlgren Admiral's House

About this Event

It's one of the Navy's most elegant residences -- with a colorful history to match.

And now you have the opportunity to tour the the Dahlgren base's Admiral's House, also known as the Commandant's House, while also contributing to the Dahlgren Heritage Museum's ongoing efforts to tell the story of the Navy at Dahlgren.

The current residents, Col. Melvin Sachs, USAF, the commanding officer of JWAC, and his wife, Chele, have invited us for a Holiday Tea Tuesday morning at 10 a.m., December 10. Our group of 25 will gather at the museum for the bus ride onto the base. Your donation of $100 will help us to continue to sponsor the forums, STEM programs and rotating exhibits that tell the Dahlgren story.

The construction of the Admiral's House in the 1920s created a ruckus in Congress. Critics felt the $60,000 price tag for a residence with 23 rooms, two sleeping porches, five bathrooms and a 40-by-10-foot attic was excessive. During World War II, when CAPT David Hedrick was the commanding officer on the base, the Admiral's House was back in the spotlight. The eccentric Hedrick ran a side business of raising and selling chickens from the top floor of the house.

And, yet, through all the travails and controversies of the past century, this beautiful home retains its elegant charm, perched on the banks of Machodoc Creek.

This event is open to the first 25 participants. Bus will leave the museum at 9:45 a.m. for 10 a.m. arrival at the Sachs' residence.
