Holiday Celebration and Lucky Dragons Performance

Wednesday, December 14, 2016
6-8pm
18th Street Arts Center

You are invited to come celebrate the holidays with 18th Street Arts Center and current Artist Lab Residents Lucky Dragons!

Come celebrate a year of incredible new artist work, public programs, a successful crowdfunding campaign, and the culmination of User Agreement, a residency and exhibition by Artist Lab residents Lucky Dragons. Refreshments, champagne, and holiday fun.

Lucky Dragons will also be creating a special closing performance - don't miss it!

About the Exhibition

Los Angeles-based collective Lucky Dragons (Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara) presents User Agreement, the latest phase of an ongoing project which examines existing modalities of peace through performance. The aim of User Agreement is to reverse-engineer the technologies of peace—treaties, protocols, symbols, and systems—in order to learn from what has already been invented, to repurpose and re-contextualize, to fix existing bugs and to create new possibilities for interaction. The Artist Lab functions as an incubator or hub from which to collect ideas and share a layered, in-progress inquiry with the public. Sketches, research materials, and experimental prototypes will be put to use and on display. Working backwards from research into the ways peace has been put to use—-through images, actions, and language—the artists unpack and re-imagine techniques for resolving conflict. Translated, abstracted, dispersed. The goal is to develop new peace technologies and make them available, as conditions for engagement that preserves difference and acknowledges unanswered questions.

About Lucky Dragons

Named for a fishing vessel caught in the fallout from H-Bomb tests in the mid-1950s, in an incident that gave birth to the worldwide anti-nuclear movement, Lucky Dragons is an ongoing collaboration between artists Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck. Lucky Dragons brings research into forms of participation, dissent, perception, and attention to performance and public art, purposefully working towards a better understanding of existing social ecologies through workshops, publications, and recordings. Fischbeck and Rara have presented collaborative work in a wide variety of contexts, including: REDCAT, LACMA, UCLA Hammer Museum, and MOCA in Los Angeles; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Walker Art Center Minneapolis; Institute for Contemporary Art, London; The Kitchen, New York; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the 54th Venice Biennale; and the 2008 Whitney Biennial, among others.
