Event description

Description

The emphasis of this camp is art, exploration, and fun. No need to know how to code or sew, solder, or 3d print. We will teach you everything you need to know and you will have three great projects to walk away with.

This camp runs from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on three days: 12/28, 12/29, and 12/30.

Day 1 - In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different

Wearable Electronics - Programmable LED Bracelet

Battery, Thread, Lights, Action! On Day 1, we will explore the beauty of the Lilypad platform while learning the basics of electricity. We will start by making a lightable bracelet using a small battery, several LEDs, and some conductive thread. We will connect them to our computers and write the code to control our device.

You will learn how to make your own soft, colorful, and wearable electronics. You’ll play with fabric, light, and sound to build a glowing bracelet as for you to keep. Along the way, you’ll learn how to sew, design electronics, and write computer programs.

The cutting edge field of electronic textiles or e-textiles is a recent development in both design and engineering. E-textiles are fabrics with embedded electronics, including sensors, lights, motors, and small computers. Designers of e-textiles keep things soft by employing new materials like conductive thread, conductive fabric, and flexible circuit boards. E-textiles are used in many different domains and settings including astronaut space suits, wearable medical devices, and haute couture fashions. You’ll find them in Lady Gaga costumes that change shape, high-tech military tents, and jackets that keep you warm while you snowboard.

What students can expect from this workshop:

  • How to create a simple circuit.
  • An Introduction to the Arduino programming environment.
  • Several projects that you can take home to show to your friends and family.
  • No previous experience needed!

Day 2 - Can You Hear Me Now?

Solar Powered Cell Phone Chargers

We are just getting warmed up as we look to the sun for inspiration. There was a time when people laughed at the thought of most households having a computer. Times have changed - you are invited to join the next big thing in technology. 2016 may be the year of 3D printing, when this three-decade-old technology finally becomes accessible and even commonplace. We will focus on how 3D printing can and will change the world. On Day 2, you'll learn the basics of 3D design, printing and basic electronics as we build 3D printed solar cellphone chargers (one for you and another to be donated to a refugee). Learning while helping others is awesome.

What you can expect:

  • A clear overview about 3D printing and the design process.
  • How to create objects in a 3D environment.
  • Working with others to solve a real world problem.
  • Introduction to soldering and electronics.

Day 3 – I am ready to travel the universe

Virtual Reality Headset

We are saving the best for last. The future is here and it is awesome. Virtual and augmented reality is poised to change the way that we learn and interact. All of the tech giants are betting on these emerging technologies. The first time I experienced virtual reality I totally understood what all of the excitement was about. Not only are you going to build a VR headset and hologram viewer you will learn how to create content for both of these platforms.

What you can expect:

  • A clear understanding of virtual and augmented reality
  • How to use your cell phone to create your own content
  • How to make your own holograms
  • Introduction to soldering and electronics.

About the instructor:

Ray Kinne is a local artist and educator He especially interested programming, hacking, and art installations. His latest creation is a Mobile Graffiti Lab.
