As we get close to the holiday season, the ALN DC Chapter wants to give back to the community that has been so good to us. So, for the month of December, all proceeds for our event will go to Homestretch (http://homestretchva.org).
Agile is often thought of as a rigid process: it has a manifesto, standard process diagrams, and strict rules for implementation. However, Agile is also means to an end, and its ultimate goal is to solve product development problems. Depending on the unique qualities of your business, the stage of your business, or whether you even are a business (government agency?), the problems differ - and so should your product development process! This talk will showcase how Agile has been customized, modified, and reimagined at the wildly fast-growing Opower to keep up with the evolution of the company. Topics range from achieving product-market fit to hiring to enterprise scale to overcoming regulatory hurdles.
About the Speaker:
Ben Foster is VP of Product at Opower, one of the hottest technology companies in the DC area. Since early 2010, he oversaw the transition of the company from little-known startup to the clear leader in residential energy efficiency. Defining the early product strategy, direction, and development process while scaling the team more than 5x, he now leads Opowers' expansion into commercial energy efficiency. Prior to Opower, Ben led major product initiatives at eBay, Adchemy, and a variety of Silicon Valley startups. Ben is an expert in applied behavioral science and software product design, and has been awarded several patents for his innovative ideas. On the side, Ben acts as a "volunteer advisor" for companies driving positive social change, and he maintains an independent blog about product management best practices at pmrant.com.
