Event description
Holding Heimat: a weekend event that mixes food, music, nature and making to uncover the spirit of home, belonging and community.

About this Event

We’re back for the second edition of Holding Heimat: a weekend event that mixes food, music, nature and making to uncover the spirit of Heimat — a German word that expresses a sense of home or place of belonging. The spirit of the event stays the same but this year we are focused on the topic of what it really means to be a community in a time of transience.

The desire for Heimat is more profound than ever as we see many long for home and community. There is a balance between embracing all that a new place has to offer while maintaining familiar rituals and norms. As we all seek a deeper sense of community, we believe it can be experienced when we are advocates of generosity.

To continue on our quest for Heimat, and inspired by hospitality and creativity, we’re pleased to offer another weekend of community, inspiration, and engaging conversation with you!

THE SPACE BY HOTEL TRINSERHOF

A charming country house in the Tyrolean Gschnitztal has been run by the Covi family for four generations; Jörg and Harry Covi now run the hotel and restaurant in Trins/Tyrol, with the support of all family members involved with everything from the vegetable garden to the creation of each hotel room. The Covi family celebrates adventure, authenticity, sustainability and are keen to experiment. During Holding Heimat, you will enjoy a 2-night stay in one of the 20 uniquely designed rooms as well as an authentic Austrian meal and welcome cocktail at the quaint vintage bar. http://trinserhof.com

THE NATURE BY THE TYROLEAN ALPS

To come to the Gschnitztal valley means arriving in a place surrounded by beauty. This cosy municipality boasts great skiing in the winter and beautiful mountain hikes in the spring and summer. Proximity to the Italian border is an added bonus for eager travellers! We’ll be guided by Jennifer Covi on a leisurely 4-5 hour hike (with a packed lunch) to soak in all that this area has to offer. Bring some good footwear and layers to be ready for various types of weather.

THE FOOD BY HELGA HAGER

After training as a gastronomy expert and graduate sommelièr, Helga resumed management of an alpine pasture in 2011 where she maintains 14 goats and from their milk creates cream cheese like it was done in France 100 years ago. Helga Hager lives two lives: In summer she is on the alp, while in winter she works as a sommelier in Kitzbühel. But she can't turn off her love for good wine on the Nockeralm either. "If it's good for the soul, it can't harm the liver," says a little sign outside the mountain pasture. "Basically, everything comes down to the question of what the culture of mountain farmers is worth to us and whether we want to preserve it or not." The School of the Alm is an attempt to answer this question. We’ll take a hike up to the Alm and enjoy a multiple course culinary exploration with Helga. https://helgasalm.at

THE MUSIC BY KIMBERLY RYDELL AND FRIENDS

Kimberly Rydell is an Austrian-born actress and singer who has an appreciation for musical legends who have gone before her and now performs their inspirational music with her own unique twist. From Jeff Buckley and Bob Marley to Amy Winehouse and Ray Charles, Kimberly demonstrates a vocal range that keeps you entertained and likely wanting to sing along. She will be joined by bass legend Wolfgang Henn and his trio to offer us an intimate concert in the Austrian alps.

THE MAKING BY GRETE KRAFT ATELIER

We are living a life of travel and work — but have become particularly attached to the treasures that remind us of our home in Austria: the mountains, the alps. We have struggled to find quality products with lasting designs that can find themselves useful and eye-catching in the contemporary household so we took it into our own hands and created something new.

Austrian Design has a grand legacy; it’s a rare combination of ornamental design language and high functionality. We have witnessed the pride of Alpine craftsmanship and the artisans themselves who hone their trade to perfection. The decades and centuries of knowledge, passion, and heritage they have built deserve to be celebrated.

Grete Kraft Atelier is a homewares line that celebrates traditional Alpine craftsmanship but with a mind to end kitschy tshatshkes manufactured overseas and move toward minimal accessories that are crafted by local makers using regionally sourced materials. Grete Kraft selects honest artisans, local to the European Alps, to collaborate on a line of authentic products that are reworked to incorporate a clean and relevant design. https://www.gretekraft.com

During our weekend you can expect to connect with the work of Grete Kraft as well as create your own personal item that evokes the spirit of Heimat.
