Event description

Description

Please consider joining me as I lead and teach my best-selling nature photography workshop, Spring Photography in Hocking Hills, Wednesday May 13 through Friday afternoon May 15, 2020. Once again I will making use of the beautiful meeting facilities at The Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls, centrally located in the heart of the Hocking Hills region and convenient to the breathtaking locations that make Hocking Hills one of top destinations for landscape and nature photography, not only in Ohio but in the United States. I have been photographing in Hocking Hills since 1980 and teaching and guiding workshops there since 2009.

But this workshop will be much more than guided excursions to scenic locations. Any photography “tour” can take you to iconic locations. What separates my workshops from the others is my commitment to teaching my students beyond the basics of the technical/camera settings. I challenge my students to develop their own, unique creative vision and how the camera can best serve artistic style through composition, arrangement of elements, and mastering natural light. Students learn to craft images that are a direct reflection of their connection to subject and desire to go beyond just simply sharing good images but to use their images in the telling of compelling stories that engage the viewer to what to look beyond the obvious.

In addition to working as a professional photographer I am also an experienced educator, having taught at the collegiate level at several universities and colleges, currently both The University of Dayton and at The Modern College of Design. My teaching style is open, fluid, and encouraging, but also always challenging my students to go deeper than mere mechanics and procedure to tap into the creative spirit. I believe that when students are given the right environment and opportunity, creative energy and spirit flows freely and naturally through that wonderful, spontaneous interaction of vision, environment, and story.

Several of my past students have gone on to becoming accomplished and award-winning photographic artists. For me, as a teacher, there is no better reward than to see students excel within their chosen medium and break through to discovering a creative vision and style that they can truly call their own.

This workshop is open to all levels of photographic skill and experience. I offer valuable lessons and insights to photographers who are just starting-out with their first DSLR camera to photographers with years of shooting experience. My approach is based on the belief that photography and art are never-ending learning processes. I also foster a workshop environment that is friendly, supportive, and non-competitive. I have seen, time and time again, that when an instructor sets the right stage and setting students can learn just as much, if not more, from each other as they do from their teacher.

The facilities at The Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls provide the perfect setting and environment for exploring art and photography. My workshops are a careful, well thought-out balance of both classroom discussion and lessons learned and explored in the “field,” out on location. We will visit and photograph some of the most popular scenic locations in Hocking Hills State Park but once there I will challenge my students to explore and experiment with their photography beyond simple imitation and onward toward artistic innovation, from macro, close-up of natural details to the wider landscapes amongst the sandstone gorges, streams, and Hemlock filled forests of Hocking Hills State Park.

This workshop will be limited to the first 20 participants who register. Registration is now open. Register by email to jim@jimcrotty.com or by calling 937-896-6311. I do require a $50 non-refundable deposit to hold your seat, payable via PayPal to “jim@ohiophoto.org," by check to Picture Ohio LLC, mailed to 7383 Cades Cove, Centerville, OH 45459, or by buying a ticket on this Facebook page. Remaining balance is due the first morning of the workshop program.

The workshop will begin promptly at 8:30AM Wednesday morning, May 13 and conclude at noon, Friday, May 15. Box lunches are included for both Wednesday and Thursday during the workshop program. Lodging and transportation are not included. We do however car pool to and from locations within the Park and The Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls. I highly recommend lodging be reserved separately at The Inn, however, if none available I do provide registered students with a list of nearby alternatives that are quite comfortable and convenient as well.

Join me to not only photograph one of the best locations in Ohio during what I have found to be the optimal time of year for excellent conditions but also the opportunity to grow and develop as a true artist photographer. It will be a wonderful experience you will always remember!
