Event Details

The HMI Young Professionals cordially invite you to our happy hour party.

Join us for an evening of fun, food, and cocktails as you learn more about the Hetrick-Martin Institute and its programming to empower LGBTQ youth.

HMI serves nearly 2000 youth on-site with wrap-around services that range from basic needs such as Case management (assistance finding housing), hot meals, day-to-day survival supplies like flashlights and clean underwear to one-on-one counseling, art therapy, support groups, dance clubs, all the way to tutoring, help applying to colleges and getting scholarships, to job readiness training and internships with corporate partners.

Hetrick-Martin Institute Key Programs:

Youth Services - From the moment a young person walks through our doors, a counselor with HMI Youth Services assesses the young person’s safety, physical and mental health needs, then provides access to critical services, such as individual and group counseling; mental health care; case management; homeless youth support; substance abuse treatment; HIV/STI testing; legal, medical and housing referrals; etc. In addition, Café HMI provides hot meals daily (7,000+ last year), and our Pantry offers homeless youth private shower facilities, laundry services, packaged food and a clothes closet with new or slightly-used clothing.

Harvey Milk High School – HMI founded what is now known as Harvey Milk High School, the nation’s first public transfer high school where some of the city's most at-risk youth can learn without threat of the physical violence or emotional harm they face in a traditional educational setting. As lead partner, HMI provides tutoring, college prep and credited classes in the humanities, as well as mental health services and access to our groundbreaking after-school programs.

HMI: New Jersey – Launched in 2011, HMI: New Jersey is the first comprehensive after-school program in New Jersey dedicated to providing a safe, supportive environment for at-risk LGBTQ youth who face harassment, abuse, neglect, homelessness and disconnection from traditional social supports. HMI: New Jersey is the pilot in what we hope will be a system of federated models around the country that replicate our pioneering programs and best practices.

Center for LGBTQ Youth Advocacy & Capacity Building – HMI’s newest initiative advocates on behalf of LGBTQ youth by influencing policy on local, national and international levels, while helping to augment the ability of decision-makers, individuals and institutions to serve this marginalized population. Our Center is dedicated to sharing best practices for working with LGBTQ youth in all aspects of their lives and addressing the disparities in services available to them.
