HIV and Addiction Training

Presented by: Mary Hawkins and other panelist


Course Description:

This introduction to HIV training will include information on treatment, self-awareness, an overview of Rapid Testing, safety first and first person speaker, and discussion about HIV, mental health and substance use.


Objectives:

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • Learn the history and basic facts of HIV which will include treatment options
  • Be able to identify ways that personal belief/judgment as a counselor might interfere with effective HIV prevention work
  • Understand how an OraSure rapid HIV testing is administered


An HIV positive staff member will speak from a first person perspective and discuss their targeted program population.

The Mental Health & Addition Counselor will discuss the mental health needs of our HIV positive clients.


About the Presenter:

Mary Hawkins moved from Louisiana to Tennessee in 1997 for her career with General Motors. Mary’s automotive background ranged from production and service parts purchasing, packaging engineering and quality control. In 2009 she joined Nashville CARES, the largest service provider for people living with HIV/AIDS in Tennessee where she currently holds the position of Prevention & Training Manager. Mary is a CDC certified master trainer for Fundamentals in HIV Counseling and Testing since 2010. She received her MBA from Baker College in 2000 and her BA in Business Management from Southern University in 1996. Mary has a passion for educating the community about the facts and myths related to HIV/AIDS and encouraging annual HIV testing.

A - It is helpful for check-in, but we can check you in without it.
