About this event
From a tyrannical absolute monarchy to the current democratic constitutional monarch, the evolution of the governance of the United Kingdom is a fascinating story. After all, the person who runs the country — known as the British Prime Minister — was a position that evolved over hundreds of years rather than being deliberately created. How exactly did this top role grow in influence over the generations, and what are the stories — both heroic and humiliating — behind some of these political leaders? It's time to uncover the role of the British Prime Minster like never before.
Join New York Adventure Club as explore the history of the British Prime Minster, from the events in the 18th century that led to the transfer of power from the British Monarchy to an elected official, to profiles on some of the 57 men and women who've held the highest-ranking government position.
Led by award winning London Blue Badge Tourist Guide Nick Salmond, our deep dive into the British Political system will include:
- A look at some of the men and women who have taken on the role of British Prime Minister since the first appointment in 1721, including details on their background, education, and achievements
- An in-depth discussion of the first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, who exploited events to dramatically change the way the country was governed
- How the youngest ever Prime Minister, William Pitt, took the reins of power at just 24 years old, along with what he achieved
- The story of the only Prime Minister to have been assassinated, Spencer Perceval, who was shot in the houses of Parliament
- Details of the greatest war Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, who led the country through most of the Second World War
- The legacy of Britain's first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with Nick — any and all questions about the British Prime Minister are welcomed and encouraged!
