Speaker: Nathan Sloan, Fort Caswell

Sloan, historian for the Fort Caswell site on Oak Island in Brunswick County, will provide an overview of this early fort—which protected the Cape Fear River and was named after North Carolina’s first state governor and Revolutionary War hero Richard Caswell—from its conception and construction in the 1820s through its current uses. Sloan will also briefly talk about the property’s partial ownership by the Baptist State Convention and efforts to adapt the facilities for modern use while preserving the site’s heritage.
