Event description

Description

How did public schools in Hamilton County get where they are today? The system that educates 45,000 children in our community is the product of decades of social and legal influences and decisions by policy makers. It's vital to understand where we've been and where we are today in order to shape a brighter tomorrow.

A few topics covered:

  • Brown v. Board of Education comes to Hamilton County
  • Key lawsuits around desegregating local schools
  • Removal of the desegregation ordinance
  • White flight and protests
  • Merger between city and county school systems
  • Current state of school zoning, classroom discipline, graduation rates, course offerings, and more
  • What's working around the nation
  • What's next for our community and schools?

Join us to discuss, learn, grow, share, and organize to affect grassroots change for public education in our community!

Goals of this workshop:

  • Build relationships with other community members and UnifiEd staff
  • Gain a shared language and terminology for discussing public education
  • Learn about the history and politics of education policy and funding, with a particular focus on a perspective of equity in our schools
  • Develop skills for personal and professional growth in service to the community
  • Grow capacity for critical empathy essential for sustained political engagement
  • Provide an opportunity for story sharing and collective visioning with Hamilton County community members
  • Build power to make change!
