Event description

Description

As part of the tenth anniversary of World Wide Photo Walk Day, we invite anyone with an interest in photography, architecture, a little local history, and/or fall foliage to join us at the beautiful Dillon Home Museum and Grounds in Sterling IL. There is no charge for this event--just enthusiasm and a smile.

At 9 am on October 7th, we will meet at Old No. 73, a 1929 Baldwin locomotive and the last steam engine to be used in a work setting in America. Old No. 73 hauled steel for Northwestern Steel and Wire (owned by the Dillon family since 1879) and is now part of the Dillon Home Museum and Grounds. The home itself, built in 1859, is a wonderful example of Italianate architecture and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The grounds are spacious and offer a number of ground plants as well as many trees which should be near peak autumnal colors by Oct. 7th.

Directly behind the Dillon Home is the access to Martin’s Landing and the Sinnissippi Dam Walkway which will provide a vista of the Rock River, the “upper” dam (beneath your feet!), and, maybe, the pelicans. There will be plenty of time to snap pics of the Dillon Home, the grounds, and Martin’s Landing as they are all within the same area.

After an hour to an hour and a half, we will reluctantly call a halt to the photo walk, jump into our cars for a quick drive to Air Play Espresso and Bakery. (Easy to follow directions will be provided the day of the walk.) Here we will debrief, share photos, laugh and chortle, and maybe even make plans for next year!

(Even though there is no charge, we do need everyone to register as there is a limit of 50 participants and we need an accurate total. Please use the Worldwide Photo Walk site to register--don't use Eventbrite for the final--and official--sign up. You need to go to Worldwide Photo Walk website, click on "Find a Walk," and then look for the pin dropped on Sterling, IL--about 120 miles due west of Chicago.)
