Event description

Description

The Historias de la Vida Celebration Event is an annual fundraising event for the South Texas Literacy Coalition. The main purpose of the event is to celebrate those persons in the community who are chosen as Literacy Champions bringing awareness and promoting literacy in the community. Individuals and organizations are chosen in these two categories. We also celebrate the awarding of the Literacy Excellence Award for Librarians in three categories - public, school, and academic.

The event is a social event which includes an awards program, food, beverages and libations, entertainment, a photo opportunity, and a silent auction. With the support of our donors and sponsors we can continue our efforts to implement family literacy, financial literacy, health literacy, and other literacy promotion programs helping children, students, and families develop the reading and writing, critical thinking, and communication skills to help everyone aspire to attain the highest levels of literacy.

The Historias de la Vida theme is an on-going theme for this annual event because it embeds the culture of our region into the importance of literacy in daily life. Historias de la Vida/Stories of our Lives embodies the history, culture, and family heritage that each one of us possesses. The event was started in 2008, when the STLC was formally organized into a 501-c-3 non-profit organization by the charter members of the board of directors, under the encouragement of then Congressman Ruben Hinojosa - a champion for education.
