HISPA 2019 Role Model Program Kick-Off and Recruiting Event, hosted by Verizon and HSO

2019 HISPA Kick-Off Poster

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Verizon Hispanic Support Organization (HSO) would like to invite you to a very special Hispanic Heritage Month event in partnership with Hispanics Inspiring Students' Performance and Achievement (HISPA).

HSO is the Verizon employee resource group to promote professional development of Verizon Hispanic employees, to partner with marketing and capture the Hispanic emerging market and promote societal growth and outreach in the communities we serve. This year HSO has chosen "All of Us: Nuestras Voces Unidas - Our Voices United" as the theme for all of their Hispanic Heritage Month events. This theme aligns perfectly with HISPA's educational programs in which Nuestras Voces Unidas are transforming students' lives.

HISPA, Verizon, and Verizon's Hispanic Support Organization (HSO) invite you to join this 2019 Role Model Program Kick-Off and Recruiting Event, themed "Leading our Youth in Discovering Their Potential" on September 24 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

This event will bring HISPA supporters together for one common goal: to commit to SHARE, INSPIRE, and TRANSFORM the lives of students. You do not have to be a current HISPA volunteer to attend; all those interested in learning more about HISPA or becoming a volunteer are welcome to join us for food, music, and the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Guests will hear from industry leaders and enjoy networking opportunities with representatives from companies across New Jersey and New York City. Two round-trip tickets courtesy of Southwest Airlines will be given away as door prizes among those who register to be HISPA Role Models.

HISPA CALL TO ACTION

HISPA is active throughout New Jersey, New York City, San Antonio and Florida. To date, we have mobilized over 2,500 volunteers to encourage over 13,000 students to fulfill their potential through academic achievement. Join us and learn more about becoming a HISPA Role Model, sharing your story and inspiring young Latinos to excel in school and pursue higher education to achieve their dreams. Inspirational speakers and HISPA Role Models will share their experiences and the impact of their volunteerism.

WHY A ROLE MODEL PROGRAM?

The majority of children never have to ask themselves the question, "Can I really be a teacher, doctor, astronaut, or politician?” Unfortunately, many Latino youth do not see role models that look like them in such professions. Research has shown a strong correlation between students having a mentor or role model and their pursuit of higher education:

“The findings identified four family background characteristics that contributed to their scholarly achievement. The four themes were (a) a strong parental commitment to the importance of education, (b) parental facilitation of their child's autonomy, (c) an array of nonverbal, parental expressions of support for educational goals and tasks, and (d) the presence of supportive faculty mentors and role models in the students' lives.”

Latino students need role models to help them see their educational opportunities and to show them how to navigate the college system. For many of these students, this knowledge may not be available from other sources. For this reason, it is important to provide credible Latino role models to students. We invite you to join our efforts to eradicate the lack of role models as a reason why our students don't pursue higher education.
