Event Details

Dorothy H. Hirshon artist-in-residence Toni Dove presents a retrospective of her work over the past 15 years working with interactive cinema performance and installation. Dove’s most recent piece, Lucid Possession, is a live-cinema performance mixed and animated in real time in which cutting-edge motion-sensing technologies are used to create complex layers of media. Lucid Possession presents both a contemporary ghost story and a poetic musing on noise management, self-perception, and fame in virtual and real social spaces.

A reception at Lang Cafe (65 West 11th Street New York, NY 10011) with the artist will follow the event.

Since the early 1990s, Toni Dove has produced unique and highly imaginative embodied hybrids of film, installation art and experimental theater. Her projects include: Spectropia, a feature length live-mix movie performance for two players; Artificial Changelings, an interactive narrative installation that uses motion sensing to unfold a romance thriller about shopping; Casual Workers, a video installation commissioned for the lobby of a movie theater in Times Square; Archeology of a Mother Tongue, a virtual reality murder mystery made in collaboration with Michael Mackenzie; and Lucid Possession, a live cinema performance mixed and animated in real-time. A robotic dress interface for a cinema installation is currently in development. These projects have been exhibited or performed at ZKM, the Museum of Moving Image, the ZERO1 Biennal, Montreal International Festival of New Cinema and New Media, the Wexner Center for the Arts, REDCAT, The Kitchen and many other venues and festivals. Her work has been sponsored by Creative Time, HERE Arts Center and EMPAC. Dove has also received numerous grants and awards including support from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Greenwall Foundation, the Langlois Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, The LEF Foundation, mediaThe Foundation, and the Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts from M.I.T. She is currently serving as the 2014-2015 Dorothy H. Hirshon Artist in Residence at the School of Media Studies at The New School.
