Description

THE ELEPHANT AND THE CHAIN

A SOLO EXHIBITION BY HIN ft PABLO DELGADO

According to urban legend, among traditional circuses a trainer would chain an infant elephant around its leg in order to restrain its movements. The infant elephant would at first try to escape.

Yet after repeated attempts to free itself, the elephant realised that escaping is futile, and it gives in to its confines, enabling the trainer to control it for the rest of its life. The elephant grows up to become the most powerful land mammal on earth, but all that is required is a small chain around its leg, attached to a feeble wooden peg stuck in the ground, to stop it from roaming free. The elephant simply does not believe it can break the boundaries that have been prescribed by his trainer.

Like the elephant, we humans go through life limited by our past experiences. Our fear of failure and of the unknown is, like the elephant’s chain, a strange kind of comfort blanket, that keeps us secure. Our lack of self-belief stops us from even making an attempt to unshackle ourselves.

The Elephant and the Chain is an exhibition of new artworks in which the Cantonese artist Hin attempts to visualize the essence of this self-constructed mental slavery, to a more liberated state of mind. A mix of 2D and 3D artworks use his typical offbeat humour and wistful approach, hoping to create a diverse visual experience for the viewers from all walks of life.

The exhibition also features a special collaboration with renowned Mexican artist Pablo Delgado.
