Mt. Diablo Hike
Saturday May 28, 2011
WHERE: Mt. Diablo is located about 2.25 hours Southwest of Roseville. Take I-80 west to hwy 680 to Walnut Creek. I’ll give you further directions at the carpool meeting place.
WHAT: The hike to Mt. Diablo Peak is rated moderately challenging (3 boots) with a 2400 foot total elevation gain. We will be doing the Grand Loop trail which is 7.6 miles, with several sections of steep up and steep down hills. The hike itself is beautiful as you will have wide views of the Bay Area along most of the trail, and the wildflowers this time of year will be stunning! Poison oak is also found on parts of the trail so be forewarned! The summit of Mt. Diablo (3849’) has a visitor’s education center and museum with a small store. The hike should take about 5 hours total to complete and we will have our lunch break on a bluff with great views before we get to the summit.
WHO: This hike is for those who are in good physical condition and have experience hiking for the whole day at a steady pace.
WHEN: We will leave Saturday morning at 7:15 a.m. from the Park ‘n Ride at Eureka and Taylor Road (by Sunsplash). Be prepared to help out drivers with gas money (A good rule of thumb is $2.50 for each hour of drive time. This trip would be about $10 each rider). Please contact me if you are coming from Hwy 50 want to arrange meet along the way. We should get back to Roseville by 5:30 pm.
WHAT TO BRING: Layered clothing that wicks moisture, preferably long plants (poison oak), Hat, Sunscreen, Sunglasses, a light jacket and gloves in case of cool wind or potential rain, at least 2 liter containers of water (hydration bladders or Nalgene-type bottles), Food for lunch and snacks and a Camera.
