Hiking: Dead Truck Trail - Cool - June 25, 2011
Saturday, June 25, 2011 from 7:45 AM to 2:00 PM (PDT)
Dead Truck Trail
June 25, 2011
Please RSVP to me for this hike.
I’ve made some calls about the intended hike on Saturday for the Bear Lakes Loop in the Lakes Basin area, and it isn’t doable right now because of the snow. I was there on 6/11 and this is what the road in to the trail looked like (see picture attached). I tried to hike in from another, lower location and that didn’t work, either.
Anything over 5500’ right now is under snow, and any trails lower than that are impassable if they cross streams. L
So…our consolation hike will still be good! We’ll do the Dead Truck Trail in Cool (at the Third Gate of Auburn Lakes Trails subdivision on 193). We’ll need to carpool as there is limited parking. Let’s meet at the 3 Crosses at 7:45 (not 7:15) and we’ll get up there before it gets too hot.
The trail is shaded most of the way. There are streams and waterfalls, and for those that want a little longer hike, we can go to the river. There is about 1700’ elevation gain and the last couple of miles coming back out of the trail is uphill, so it’s not for the faint of heart! Linda and I hiked it last Saturday and enjoyed ourselves immensely. The hike will take 2-3 hours, but bring a lunch and/or snacks, we may want to play in the water a bit. Bring plenty of water, you will need it. Poles will be helpful. The most abundant plant along the trial is poison oak, so dress accordingly.
Helen is training for a backpack trip and wants extra miles; do any of you want to do about 10 miles instead of 5-7?
Please bring your Release on Saturday. Next month I have another Plumas County hike planned, and I KNOW we’ll be able to go at the end of July!
The event is free, but we ask all participants to be current members of BAS. ($25/individual/year or $50/family/year). If you are new to BAS, a free three month trial is available by emailing Pamela Harvey at PamelaH@Baysideonline.com.
Contact Marilyn Eschenbaum (530.263.2998 – firstname.lastname@example.org) with any questions.
