Description

Environmental History of Modini Mayacamas Preserve

Join Dave Self, ACR Resource Ecologist, and AEP/APA for a hike on Audubon Canyon Ranch’s (ACR) remote, 3,000-acre Modini Mayacamas Preserves, located 8 miles northeast of Healdsburg, high above the Alexander and Knights Valleys. Starting from the junction of Pine Flat and Red Winery Roads, we’ll drive 9 miles up Pine Flat Road to Little Sulphur Creek. From there, we’ll take a short one mile hike west and 300 feet up to the ridgeline, to appreciate serpentine sunflowers, turpentine weed and other late summer wildflowers. We’ll also enjoy views of Alexander Valley and the outer Coast Ranges. During the walk, Dave will talk about the environmental history of this area (which included an 1870’s mining town), the role of fire in the ecology of the region, and about ACR’s fire program and mountain lion project.

PLEASE ESVP BY AUGUST 17, 2017. Non-APA Members are to bring $20 the day of the hike. Fees support the preservation, education and conservation science programs of Audubon Canyon Ranch.

Directions from Santa Rosa: North on 101 past Healdsburg to Lytton Springs Road exit; go right (east) 0.2 miles to end; turn right (south) onto Healdsburg Avenue and go 0.7 mile to sharp left (east) onto Alexander Valley Road; this will take you ~4 miles via 128 straight onto Pine Flat Rd and up to the first junction (Pine Flat Rd and Red Winery Rd). Park on the right, next to the vineyard.

Bring water, wear sturdy walking shoes, no dogs.
