Hike & Learn
Big Spring Historical Landmark & Crawford Memorial Park

Join us for a hike to explore two natural history gems in Dallas County: the Big Spring Historical Landmark & the prairie remnant at Crawford Memorial Park.

Owned by the City of Dallas since 2003, the Big Spring is the largest and likely the only remaining artesian spring in Dallas. The site is not open to the public and is accessible by guided tour only. Paraphrased from the Big Spring website: "The spring discharges over 12 million gallons of water into the Trinity River watershed each year. Carbon dating shows that the water is not of modern origins as it entered the aquifer system around 1360 AD." Our guides for this portion of the trip are Richard Grayson and Ben Sandifer who are well-known in Dallas County as champions for local natural areas and have done extensive work at the Big Spring.

Crawford Memorial Park is a 266-acre municipal property, established as a metropolitan park in 1964. It was originally part of the Elam Farm and was donated to the city by the Elam and Samuell families. The prairie remnant covers about 30 acres of the southern end of the park. Recently the prairie has gained fresh attention from local natural history organizations and an iNaturalist BioBlitz was conducted there in 2017. Our guide for this portion of the field trip is Sam Kieschnick, the Dallas-area urban biologist for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
