Event description

The Essential Session is a 2-hour mental health and wellness discussion for recent high school graduates, led by Dominique Harmon, LCSW, RYT 200, R-HYI, to prepare graduates for transition to college. *(Discussion will be held via Zoom video conferencing)

Dominique incorporates wisdom gleaned from her experience as a higher education student, dormitory head resident assistant, post-graduate fellow, college counseling center staff member, and 6 years of full-time private practice work counseling primarily undergraduate and graduate students, into a vital discussion for incoming college freshman.

The Essential Session is presented in a 2-hr small group (6-8 students) lecture and discussion format, to help prepare recently graduated high school seniors, transitioning to college, for optimal mental health and wellness, as they prepare to manage the demands of college-level academics and campus life. Topics covered include, a general overview of mental health and illness, alcohol and substance abuse, healthy stress management and self-care strategies, and practices to support spiritual growth and wellness. The seminar will include experiential exercises. Participants are encouraged to dress in casual, comfortable clothing.

The information presented will normalize continuity of care for students currently participating in mental health services; help students identify when they may need to seek mental health support; inform students of potential mental health, medical, and academic supports available on college campuses; and support students in identifying and building skills to address common college life stressors. The information shared in this talk will provide incoming college freshman with vital information to help them avoid common pitfalls and support them in maintaining optimal mental health and wellness as they work toward their goal of having a fulfilling, social and academic college experience.

This discussion was originally developed at the request of an Atlanta area church. In response to the church's desire to prepare their graduating high school seniors for college, Dominique created, and for the past two years, has presented this co-ed seminar to the church's graduating, college bound high school seniors. This year she is offering the lecture and discussion opportunity to the public.

**Please note, the Wednesday, July 17th, 10:00a-12:00pm discussion will be presented with a Christ-centered focus, incorporating scripture and Christ-centered stress management techniques. Students will engage in wellness and spiritual growth exercises such as, breath prayer, and Christ-centered yoga and meditation techniques.**

Dominique Harmon is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Registered Yoga Alliance 200 Hr Yoga Teacher (RYT-200) and Holy Yoga Instructor (R-HYI). She is a graduate of Indiana University and Clark Atlanta University. She completed a post-graduate fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine Child Study Center. She is a former staff member of the Emory University Student Counseling Center.
