Presenter: Kate Nizio
Guided by Kate Nizio, this full day session is meant to give Computer Science teachers the freedom to explore new programs and network with other Computer Science teachers from across the province. Whether a teacher new to teaching high school computer science, or a Comp Sci veteran, this session is intended to be more about sharing and guided discovery. A variety of development environments and languages can be explored, such as Processing, Scratch, App Inventor 2, Lego Mindstorms NXT, and Greenfoot.
This session will be organized into several parts. The length of each will be dependent on the interest of the participants:
-”Show and Tell” - If you have a project that has inspired greatness in your class, bring it! What you bring to the table is sure to inspire those who are looking for ideas. And who knows - maybe even a veteran will be inspired to try something a little different in their classroom!
-Discovery stations - Several programs, such as Processing, Scratch, App Inventor 2, and Greenfoot will be accessible, and independent intro tutorials will be supplied. If none of these interest you, feel free to "BYOD" (Bring Your Own Device) and try out something you just haven’t had the time to try yet.
-Discussion on Assessment - Prompted by various statements and examples, we’ll discuss our opinions and ideas on assessment in small and/or large group settings.
-Special Guest: Mike Domaratzki - A faculty member from the Computer Science Program at the University of Manitoba will be joining us to share his thoughts on computer science education.
Lunch will be on your own. There are a number of restaurants near by.
Audience: High School Computer Science Educators. Other levels of Computer Science Educators are welcome, but may not find the sessions as beneficial.
Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring projects they would like to share, and/or their own laptops with programs installed that they would like to explore.
Please note that there are minimal formal presentations prepared - this day is about sharing your ideas with your colleagues.
