Event description

Description

Mississippi Street is a tourist attraction in North Portland full of bars, fine dining spots, and quirky shops, but before it became a caucasian destination the Albina neighborhood was once a predominantly Black city. Becuase of extreme redlining and gentrification there are now only a few Black owned businesses left in the area, but there are still relics of Portland's Black History scattered around the Boise Neighborhood.

Join Stanley Carpenter as he takes us on a walk through Albina. Over the past few decades, dramatic changes have altered the face of the region, something which can go easily unnoticed. This tour provides a great opportunity for visitors, and residents alike to reconnect with the roots of this community and commemorates pieces of Portland's Black history with stops at one of the few remaining black owned businesses, the church where MLK Jr spoke, the remnants of Albina’s City Hall building, and more.

This is a Black led event. Know Your City (KYC) is a 9 year old Portland, Oregon based nonprofit. KYC engages the public in art and social justice through creative placemaking projects. Our programs aim to educate people to better know their communities and empower them to take action. We work towards a future where historically oppressed people have access to their history, culture, and basic human rights. 100% of the proceeds from this tour go directly into our programming.
