Event description

Description

This retreat seeks to provide a space for men to share with one another, without having to be the strong one in the room. Many men feel that while the world says men should embrace their emotions, there is little true support of that behavior in real time.

"Shame is the most powerful, master emotion. It's the fear that we're not good enough. For men, it's the fear of not being wealthy enough, tough enough, or smart enough. The number one shame trigger for men is being perceived as weak. Men walk this tightrope where any sign of weakness illicits shame, and so they're afraid to make themselves vulnerable for fear of looking weak. But if you can't be vulnerable, then you can't truly grow and be your best self." - Brene' Brown, Ph.D., LMSW

Hiatus Retreats involve deep growth work, and are therefore done in intimate groups of 12 or less. The discussion portions are heavily based in Brene' Brown's Rising Strong book and associated curriculum. Since many people learn and integrate concepts in different ways, there are adjunct activities meant to promote mindfulness, creative expression and body awareness. All non- discussion activities are optional. We also encourage simple socialization outdoors, and provide ample down time.

Most of us need a formal "Hiatus", because we have difficulty asking for what we need in day-to-day life, including time to recharge. Many people find that carving out dedicated time to gain insight and do inner work helps them be more productive and focused when they return to their lives at the end of the weekend.

FAQ

Q: What other things do we do besides discussions?

A: Non- discussion activities may include but are not limited to hiking, yoga, expressive arts, meditations, and slack line. Some board games, cards and movies are also available for down time.

Q: What does ticket cost include?

A: Cost is inclusive of activities, materials, lodging and most meals (snacks day 1, all meals day 2, and continental breakfast days 2 and 3).

Q: What are rooms and sleeping arrangements like?

A: Lodging is in cabins, in a rustic, camp-like setting. Cabins are set against Texas hill country views of Devil's Backbone highway. All rooms are shared (4 men per room) and all bathrooms are shared.

Q: Is this a religious or spiritual retreat? Can I practice my own beliefs, or not be forced to engage in activities that make me uncomfortable?

A: Although this event is held at the amazing Samadhi Yoga Retreat property, yoga is nor mandatory, nor is any other spiritual practice. These retreats are not religiously or spiritually based, and no activity related to these topics will be required. We simply present yoga, mindfulness and other non- traditional activities as ways to become better attuned to your inner self.

Q: Is this counseling? Is this considered therapy?

A: No. While the organizer and some facilitators work in the mental health field, this is not traditional counseling. This retreat is much more like a trip you may take with friends, full of laughter and authentic sharing, only structured around particular topics meant to give you some freedom. We are simply providing the space for you to do what you need to do. No participation is forced, and you can do as much as you are willing and comfortable doing. Our only requirement is that you be willing to hold space or other people to do deep work.

Q: Can I bring a pet, a minor, or another adult that has not purchased a ticket? If I come with a partner that pays, can we sleep together?

A: No. Space is limited and reserved for participants. If you have a male partner or friend that registers with you, you must sleep in separate beds.

Q: Are there discounts available?

A: Yes. As this is the first men's retreat we are offering, we are offering an exclusive discount to the first 5 men to register. These men will become part of the "Founding Five", as the men who provided the foundation for the first ever Hiatus Men's Retreat. Please send a message through eventbrite for information on if we have met our limit of 5 founding participants. We also offer a discount if registering with a friend (purchasing 2 tickets at once). Payment plans are arranged on a case by case basis.

Q: How do I know I will like the topics and the Rising Strong themes? Is there something I can watch to see if it resonates with me?

A: Not everything will resonate with every person. I you would like to get an idea of some of the concepts we will discuss, I highly recommend the following:
