Paul Balser is a founding board member of the Waterfront Alliance and is responsible for helping to launch the organization’s highly successful Harbor Camp program. Harbor Camp has gotten more than 20,000 children, primarily from settlement houses associated with the United Neighborhood Houses, in or on the water during the past decade. Harbor Camp combines two of Paul’s longtime great philanthropic passions: devotion to the less fortunate children served by the settlement houses of New York and his commitment to an open and accessible harbor.
Malcolm McLaren is the president and CEO of McLaren Engineering Group, a world renowned engineering firm that he founded 39 years ago. With nearly 200 employees in 10 offices worldwide and headquarters in New York, McLaren Engineering Group's multiple divisions include marine and waterborne transportation. From the earliest lonely days where he strapped on the diving helmet and began to explore New York Harbor’s forgotten murkiest depths, to today where he leads one of the top maritime engineering firms in the world, Mal has been an innovator, leader, and enthusiast about our waterfront.
+ POOL is bringing the world’s first water-filtering, floating pool to New York! The pool is designed to filter the very river that it floats in through its walls, making it possible for New Yorkers (and visitors) to swim in clean river water. It will clean up to half a million gallons of water every single day. Soon to be constructed in New York Harbor, + POOL, through its water testing and awareness campaign, has already hastened the day when our waterways will comply with the Clean Water Act and are made fishable and swimmable.
