Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

This is a fun-filled and educational half-day event for fourth and fifth grade boys in which they will participate in engaging workshops that will lead them down the path to identifying and embracing their unique qualities and develop skills to help build friendships. Through fun team-building activities and small break-out groups, trained facilitators will cover topics that include self-awareness, conflict resolution, stress management and respect. Not only will the boys play an exciting game of dodgeball, but they will recap their day by participating in an “amazing race" type game! Small groups will be provided clues that will lead them to curriculum-based challenges in different parts of the school.

FAQs

It appears like my Ticket Type is sold out...what should I do?
Please email us at heroes@hgna.org to be added to the waiting list. We may have cancellations between now and the event and our desire is to always accommodate as many boys as possible!

What time does check-in begin for Heroes?
Check-in for boys opens at Puffer Elementary at 8:45.

Can I register my son for Heroes the morning of the event?
Due to the preparation of materials for Heroes, on-site registrations are unavailable. Additionally, Heroes may reach capacity and have a waiting list.

Can my son come late/leave early from Heroes?
For the continuity of the day and to avoid disruptions to your son's group, we ask that your son plan to attend the entire event. We cannot retrieve boys in the middle of sessions.

When is the registration deadline for Heroes?
Registration for Heroes will close on Friday, October 27, 2017. However, we encourage you to register your son as soon as you know they will be able to attend as the event might reach capacity several weeks before the event date.

Can my son be in the same group as his friend(s)?
One of the most valuable aspects of Heroes is the opportunity for the attendees to meet and make new friends throughout the day. Feedback from facilitators over the years from similar events has reflected the fact that children tend to interact more with their groups when they are not paired up with close friends. Additionally, the boys have will have at least one opportunity to choose whom they would like to sit with during lunch.

What does my Heroes registration fee include?
Your $35 Heroes registration fee includes: three grade-specific, break-out sessions led by trained and licensed facilitators which focus on key issues that boys your son’s age face, as well as a fun game of dodgeball, a delicious lunch, all craft materials, and a unique Heroes backpack.

Please note: Through generous contributions from individuals and businesses in our community, we are able to keep the cost low and provide scholarships to boys who might otherwise be unable to attend.

What is the refund policy?
A full refund will be provided for cancellations made BEFORE Friday, October 27, 2017.

What should your son bring to the event?
We strongly encourage your son to bring only himself dressed in comfortable clothing. PLEASE LEAVE COATS AND CELL PHONES AT HOME. All organizers will have cell phones available in the case of an emergency.

What if my son needs special accommodations?
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate special dietary needs beyond vegetarians (if this isn't satisfactory, your son can bring his own lunch and snack). Any other special needs can be addressed by emailing us at heroes@hgna.org. We will do our best to be of assistance.

Does my son need to bring a printed ticket to the event?
A ticket/receipt is not necessary to check-in the morning of the event.

Who runs Heroes?
The Heroes program was created by HGNA, a Downers Grove, Illinois non-profit, volunteer organization devoted to providing boys, girls and their parents with the tools needed to navigate adolescence with confidence, resilience and kindness. This event is made possible through the tireless efforts of many parents and high-school volunteers.

Where can I contact the organizer with any questions?
HGNA can be reached at heroes@hgna.org
