Event Details

Herbal Basics is a two year-long opportunity for those who want to learn to confidently use locally available herbs and “weeds” to improve the health of themselves and their loved ones. Though we build on previous classes, each can stand alone so you may attend any class except those noted differently on the schedule. We generally  meet the second Saturday of each month, 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. beginning in January 2016. Our time will be spent indoors in the cozy setting of Silverton Grange and outdoors in its gardens and grounds.

Our full class schedule can be found at our website ElderSpiritHerbals. Join us!

About Me:

I started using herbs in my late teens. I took Jethro Kloss to heart and tried many of his ideas in Back to Eden (except the enemas!)I've since learned there are gentler ways than Jethro's poke 'em, puke 'em & purge 'em. It really appears true that almost any herb, taken even on the flimsiest notion, seems to help our bodies' natural intention to heal.
I began to use herbs really seriously in my mid-30's after having some serious health challenges.e it. I discovered herbal and natural ways and have used them only for more  than 20 years now. Time and again, I have found healing with herbs when modern western medicine would only have offered a palliative. To put things in perspective, I also understand that there are times when we ought to be very grateful for the advances in modern medicine. I truly believe that the old and news ways are completely complementary.

In 1991 my husband and I moved onto a beautiful piece of land in the Willamette Valley. I found plant after plant that I knew had been grown here on this century farm for medicinal purposes. I became consumed with the study of the plants and one day my husband (after coming home time and again to "the house is dirty and the pots are cold") told me I should really find somewhere to study. I think he thought that formal study would "get this out of my system." Ha! All it got him was stranger and stranger things in his salad and medicine chest!  This led me to the Australasian College of Herbal Medicine's Correspondence Course (I had a 3 and 5 year old at the time) and wonderful teachers such as Gina Banghart McGarry, Jude Siegel, all the great women who taught at the Women's Herbal Conference (in fact, every conference my budget would allow), Michael Moore (RIP) and many others.

I've been leading classes on our land and at other locations for over 20 years. I feel passionately that every family and community should have someone who is able to allay a cough, soothe a tummy, calm jangled nerves and ease an elders aches and pains with freely available local herbs and weeds. That's why our study group will always be affordable with lots of plant identification, harvesting techniques and hands-on preparation taught. Come study with us!
