Event description

Description

Herbal Basics is an opportunity for those who want to learn to confidently use locally available herbs and “weeds” to improve the health of their and their family’s bodies, minds and spirits. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a light supper provided. The class is open entry but it's wise to start on the 2nd Monday of the month when we begin to study a new body system.

Our time will be spent indoors in the cozy setting of Sacred Space Spiritual Center and outdoors in the fields and nearby neighborhoods seasonally. We’ll schedule harvesting days on my farm outside of Silverton as well.

Classes will include an introduction to the herbal materia medica, concentrating on the plants right outside our doorsteps, the ones traditionally used when the need arose. We’ll explore the body systems and get to know the classes of herbs that support the health of each.

Learning to prepare herbal remedies is a main focus of the course and kitchen time will be included each month. You’ll learn to make the basics: decoctions, infusions, honeys, syrups, candies, tinctures, salves and more. And, yes, we’ll learn to make tonics like elderberry elixer, vitamin syrup and hawthorn tonics. Maintaining our health is the heart of resiliance!

While herbal medicine and remedies are a focus of this group, we know that herbs are useful in so many more ways than to “use this for that.” We’ll spend time during the month sitting with one another and an herb in the meditative stillness of discovery. Reconnection is a vital part of herbalism that feeds our souls.

Some of our gatherings will include an art or crafts. Fun is at the heart of regeneration! Let’s generate some.

We’ll look at herbs for the different ages and stages of life as well as changing formulations to help support our health and those of the ones we love, including our pets. Our kitchen time will be fruitful. You can expect to end the year with a well-stocked personal apothecary which will include remedies for common ailments and tonics to prevent them.

We’ll dedicate August’s classes to herbal skin care and cosmetic making, including learning to home distill essential oils and hydrosols.

Every family and community should have someone who knows how to tend a wound, sooth a belly ache and calm frayed nerves as well as knowing when something more serious needs to be done.
