Sarasota Herald Tribune Opinion Editor Tom Tryon will join Elsie Souza for a Bookstore1 Community Conversation. Tom is responsible for the media group’s editorial and op-ed pages in print and online.

Tom joined the Herald-Tribune in 1981 as a police-beat reporter, then covered city and county governments in Manatee County. He began working in Sarasota in 1985, after joining the opinion department in 1985, where he has since written editorials and edited letters and columns. Tom became leader of the opinion department in 1998. As part of the Herald-Tribune’s outreach, during the past seven years he has moderated 24 Hot Topics forums, which have collectively drawn thousands of attendees.

A Manatee County native, Tom graduated in 1976 from Palmetto High School, where he played sports, sang in the choir and served as Student Council president as a senior. In 1980, he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he saw snow for the first time on his 18th birthday.

Tom is an Episcopalian and ardent Baltimore Orioles fan. He and his wife, Yvonne, are (or try to be) devoted parents and grandparents.

Tom and Elsie will be discussing Tom’s experiences as a Manatee County native along with other topics. Questions will follow.
