Event description
A woman’s final phone conversation with her lover before he leaves her.

About this Event

Based on a text by Jean Cocteau and composed by Francis Poulenc, La Voix Humaine is a 40-minute operatic melodrama for a solo female voice. The story is both raw and brutally honest as it explores the feelings of a woman as she has her final phone conversation with her lover before he leaves her. Despite being composed in the 1959, the text sheds light on the kind of false intimacy and solitude that new technology creates. Much like with social media, the audience will watch life fall apart in front of their eyes.

Soprano Maria Lacey (Poppea in Bare Opera’s production Poppea, November 2018) returns to Bare Opera to perform this rare gem by Francis Poulenc with Bare Opera Artistic Director and acclaimed pianist Laetitia Ruccolo. Set in the sleek living room of The New Work Project in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the intentionally limited audience will have the opportunity to witness, up-close, the real-time unraveling of a woman’s relationship.
