Event description

Description

Join us for an evening of dance, poetry, and song.

Presented to you by dancer and choreographer Jasmine Snellen, writer, poet and spoken word artist Robin G, as well as singer/songwriter Kori Black. With pure, raw, and unadulterated magnetism these women artists are taking the 502 by storm. Her-ricane, is a performance benefit in which the proceeds will aid and further support Jasmine’s choreographic endeavors; Specifically, the submission of her latest choreographic dance work to ModArts Dance Collective’s call for women choreographers of color, to present in their third annual dance festival, “Collective Thread”. The festival is set to take place Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Dixon Place in New York. Jasmine will be notified of her status in the festival no later than January 5, 2018. Nevertheless, the work will be presented in the upcoming Louisville Dance Series at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, March 2018.

Jasmine graduated from Shenandoah Conservatory and University with a BFA in Dance in 2016. Since her graduation, Jasmine has continued relentlessly in the pursuit of continuing to cultivate her passions and professional career in choreography and dance performance. “Magnetically Provocative, Organically Refined”, Jasmine has made is her mission to create work that serves as the catalyst and call to face oneself, and in turn face the true nature and reality of the society and world in which we all are responsible for living and co-creating in.

The dance piece that Jasmine is submitting to the “Collective Thread”, entitled Her-ricane is what you will have the exclusive pleasure of experiencing in this evening’s benefit, amongst the visceral and eloquently spoken words of Robin G, and the hypnotic melodies and voice of R&B singer/songwriter Kori Black. This particular dance work’s genesis and inspiration comes from a meme that has been circulating social media in lieu of the hurricanes that have been occurring internationally and in the Americas.

This and her research into understanding who the true indigenous peoples of the Americas are, and the journey to understand how she fits into this clothe has deeply informed this choreographic work.

We look forward to sharing our hearts, and art with you as a collective force to be reckoned with in Her-ricane.
