Description

The Los Angeles Women’s Network and the Outfest Women's Committee presents HER Cinema Saturday, May 26th! HER Cinema returns for an evening of film and community.

A Kid Like Jake - 6pm

A family drama about a Brooklyn couple whose four-year-old son is more interested in fairy tale
princesses than toy cars. But when his preschool director points out that his gender-nonconforming play
may be more than a phase, the couple is forced to rethink their roles as parents and spouses.

Starring: Claire Danes, Jim Parsons, Priyanka Chopra, Octavia Spencer.

Dir: Silas Howard

Reception - 7:30pm featuring live performance by Dior and Jay Poole. Hosted Bar.

To hear music written and performed by Dior is to experience sonic defiance. In a society that creates borders, her sound, lyrics, and delivery transcend boundaries and challenge listeners to step outside of theirs, and into her world. With words of love, heartbreak, growth, and tension, her songs combine the sounds of classic R&B with the familiarity of Soul, leaning heavily toward their intersection, Neo-Soul. A native of Indianapolis, Dior infuses her rural upbringing with urban sounds, producing continuously shifting melodies with vivid story-telling. A combination of positive and adverse life experiences have created the confidence that she exudes in her work. She aspires to be the voice that reassures young minds and alters the perspective of even the most seasoned ears.

Jaynese 'Ladybug' Poole from South Central, Los Angeles is a poet, dancer and screenwriter. She has been working with Street Poets Inc. and many other organizations, performing spoken word, organizing/hosting community events and holding safe spaces for youth throughout Los Angeles County and beyond. She is also a member of 4CLab, a non-profit, providing opportunities for young creative visionaries to share their stories through artistic expression. She is the Writer and Director of 'Hey Stacy' short film made through OutSet (The Young Filmmakers Project from LA LGBT Center and Outfest, a filmmaking workshop for LGBTQ young people between the ages of 16-24.) Recently, Jaynese has joined the Sunday Jump team, a community open mic series held at Filipino Workers Center on 1st Sundays, 5-7 pm in Historic Filipinotown, Los Angeles.

Hearts Beat Loud - 8:30pm

Sundance's closing night film, Hearts Beat Loud is an upbeat musical comedy about a father and daughter who form an unlikely songwriting duo in the
summer before she leaves for college.

Starring: Nick Offerman, Kiersey Clemons, Toni Colette, Ted Danson, Sasha Lane.

Dir: Brett Haley
