Hemingway Alive in Oak Park
Description
Founded in 1983 to celebrate the life of Ernest Hemingway, the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park anchors Oak Park as Hemingway's birthplace and emphasizes the influence this town had on the famous author. The Foundation's mission reflects the Foundation's belief in the importance of the written word and the value of thoughtful reading and writing.
Please join us for our first annual birthday benefit, "Hemingway Alive in Oak Park," on July 23rd, at the Oak Park Public Library from 7pm-10pm, with optional dessert "After Party" from 10pm-12am at the boyhood home featuring Philip Greene, author of "To Have and Have Another." This festive event will celebrate the past and future of Hemingway in Oak Park, bringing together fans from Oak Park, Chicagoland and beyond. The evening will feature delicious food from local vendors, specialty cocktails by Papa's Pilar rum, wine, beer, live music and a silent auction.
Access to the Hemingway archives will be available to guests at the event, and attendees will have a chance to transform into Papa or one of his wives with the first ever Hemingway photo booth! Receive an impromptu, personalized short story from Author Franki Elliot! Architectural plans for the future Writing Center at the site of the Hemingway Birthplace Home will be revealed. The winner of our inaugural short story "HEMINGWAY SHORTS" competition will be announced and first publication will be available!
In addition to proceeds benefiting the Foundation's site maintenance and endeavors, we will introduce the winner of the first annual Hemingway Foundation Scholarship, awarded to an incoming senior at Oak Park River Forest High School, which includes $1,000 and a mentorship with our Writer In Residence. 10% of benefit proceeds will be designated for our scholarship fund.
We have much to celebrate as our Foundation moves forward and we thank you for helping us keep Hemingway Alive in Oak Park!
Tickets purchased for the event include a one year membership to the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park. This event is also the Foundation's annual meeting.
Cocktail attire is suggested.
