Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

Do you have a family member who is abusing or dependent on alcohol and other drugs? Are you
tired of yelling, nagging, pleading, or have simply given up dealing with this dangerous and unhealthy
behavior? The Community Reinforcement and Family Therapy (CRAFT) method uses a supportive
and effective approach to encourage people to seek help. In this course, you will analyze the using
and non-using behavior of your loved one and learn how to apply positive reinforcement in effective
ways. You will learn how to support non-using behavior and to avoid enabling substance use. All of
these levers can be used to help motivate the person of concern to seek help and improve your life at
the same time. CRAFT is an alternative to the traditional “surprise” intervention methods that can
result in damage to relationships and have limited success rates.

CRAFT has three major goals
• To reduce the use of substances by the person of concern;
• To eventually motivate the person of concern to seek treatment;
• To improve the quality of life of those concerned about the person who is using.

Class Information
The class meets for a total of 10 hours with each session building on the work done in the previous
meeting. It is important to be able to attend all meetings for the maximum benefit. If the person of
concern is a teen or young adult, it is best if all involved parents are able to attend.
Class size is limited to 12.
