Event description

Description

A family that is ¾-way done with their home build is in trouble. Mary Kay Severin, who designed the 100% off-grid 2BR,1BA earth-contact house, has been battling cancer for the past year while she, her son Arron and her husband Allen have continued to build. Her health took a turn for the worse in mid-September. After undergoing radiation and chemotherapy, her doctors are gearing her up for surgery. Allen and Arron are trying to finish the build before winter as Mary recovers in the RV that has temporarily served as their home. They have thus far invested over $70,000 in the building of this house.

This family's home is almost livable. Let's get them in there.

On a weekend visit down to the home, you'd find things to do no matter what your level of expertise is. General construction, plumbing tasks and electrical tasks could be contracted out, paid by donations. If you'd rather help that way, please give safely and securely at https://www.crowdrise.com/get-the-severins-home.

Please consider your travel needs before coming. There is ample space for camping, hotels within a 15-20 minute drive, and grocery stores, restaurants and fast food within a 15-20 minute drive.

For Layman Volunteers:

With no prior experience working on homes, you can probably still do the following tasks just fine.
  • You can help smooth out already-assembled rammed-earth-water-bottle walls with mud plaster by hand (gloves optional).
  • You can help smooth out exterior rammed-earth-tire walls with papercrete.
  • You can help "feed" and monitor a cement mixer.
  • You can learn how to compact a rammed-earth tire in the "garage wing".
  • You can help dig in-ground greenhouse planters with a demolition hammer and shovels.
Please bring work gloves, and a sledgehammer and shovel if you have them. Dishwashing gloves can be helpful if you need to keep mud off of your hands.

For Volunteers with General Construction Experience:

You may encounter a need for one or two of the following, depending on when you come:
  • Framing walls (2 rooms).
  • Hanging drop ceilings (2 rooms).
  • Installing insulation.
  • Laying cement.
  • Installing cabinetry.
  • Connecting liquid propane tank to kitchen appliances.
Hammers, levels, screwdrivers and other tools may be useful to bring.

For Volunteers with Plumbing and Electrical Experience:

We need professionals to perform the following tasks:
  • Only 2 more lights need connection and installation.
  • Plumbing fixtures will need installation.

Driving Directions:

From KC, take I-49 just past Harrisonville to MO-7 S to go to Springfield, MO. Just past the Springfield city limits, take I-44 E and then US-65 S to bypass Springfield. Take US-60 E to Willow Springs, where US-63 splits off to go S. Take US-63 10 miles. Just past the West Plains Regional Airport there's a junction with MO-P if you turn right and MO-N if you turn left. You want MO-N. Drive East on MO-N about 3 miles until you see a small cemetery on the right. Turn right at the cemetery, which is on County Road 2070. In just under a mile at the Y, turn right onto County Road 2060. The Severins are the first driveway on the left.
