Event Details

Overview:

Our current First-Past-the-Post voting system is being taken to court in Quebec on February 8th.  The plaintiffs claim that FPTP violates our charter rights to equal and effective treatment of voters.  Please join us in a webinar to learn more about the legal basis for this potentially ground-breaking case and visit the Fair Voting BC website to contribute to our fundraiser.  You can find more details about the case by clicking here.

Agenda:

During this webinar, the plaintiffs will outline the background of this case, including the problems with how we currently vote, the legal arguments they'll be making, and the results of the first court appearance which has led to the current appeal.

Online Townhall Meetings + In-Person Gatherings:

This event will be broadcast as a webinar, so you can watch it in the comfort of your own home from anywhere in BC or around the world, but Fair Voting BC is also sponsoring several in-person events and we encourage you to make it a social occasion by joining your fellow democratic reform supporters at one of our satellite meetings in Vancouver, Victoria, Kamloops and Langley.  Addresses for these local venues are shown below:

  • Vancouver Public Library, Alma VanDusen Room, 350 W Georgia St.
  • Langley - 8991 Bartlett Street (home of Tim Jones, host)
  • Victoria -Emily Carr Library, 3500 Blanshard, just behind the Save-On grocery store
  • Kamloops – Cafe Motivo (formerly Cowboy Coffee), 229 Victoria St.

If you would like to host an in-person event in your town or city, please contact Tim Jones at tjjones4 @ telus . net.

Fundraiser & Event Costs

In conjunction with this webinar, we are also holding a fundraiser to support this court challenge, especially since it will likely end up in the Canadian Supreme Court.  Visit Fair Voting BC to make a donation and become part of this historic event.  All the money collected through this fundraiser will go directly to the plaintiffs to support their case (less a 3% fee charged by PayPal).  We also invite and encourage you to make a separate contribution to Fair Voting BC (ideally, by becoming a member!) to help us continue to be able to put on this kind of event.

If you are attending one of the on-site meetings, you will likely be invited to make a small contribution to assist with facility costs.  We usually choose venues where these costs are modest - typically in the range of $5-10 per person.  We don't want anyone to stay away because of financial concerns, but we certainly appreciate contributions to our expenses.
