Event description

Description

Lakeside Stories is a one-day educational workshop & performance at the Peter Strauss Ranch within the Santa Monica Mountain National Recreation Area. This day explores memory and storytelling through the lense of art and ecology.

From 12pm – 2pm participants will enjoy activities that include a printmaking workshop exploring monotype transfer drawings and ghost print techniques using found objects as mark-making utensils led by painter and muralist, Kim West and a local flora and fauna hike with National Park Ranger, Tori Kuykendall. At 2pm Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre dancers Himerria Wortham and Belle Jessen will perform a new work in the 650,000 gallon abandoned swimming pool where West’s 115-foot mural is installed. During the site-specific performance, the dancers will transform the work of West’s installation, while activating different parts of the site. Following HDDT’s performance Millennium Dance Complex Company will show a work created in collaboration with HDDT teaching artists and will incorporate the monotype transfer drawings and ghost print techniques from West’s workshop.

Following the performance is a HDDT Member reception inside Peter Strauss Ranch. Not a HDDT Member? Click here to learn about our membership program and join today!

Kim West is a painter whose visual arts practice incorporates studio painting, mural making, and installation. The NY Times has called West’s mural work, “dreamlike,” and in scope, her public projects range from murals rendered on intimately sized wall corners, to expanses of 5-story-high building façades, to installations that interact with structures and sites found in nature and in public gathering spaces.

Tori Kuykendall is Park Ranger for the National Parks Service Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Her expertise is in the areas of park conservation, youth engagement in the environment, and the intersection between arts and nature. Before working for the National Parks Service, Kuykendall worked as a Peace Corps Volunteer Coordinator supporting the environmental education volunteers in the field and running the grant program in association with USAID.

Lakeside Stories is funded by the City of Agoura Hills and Third District Supervisor Sheila Kuehl of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, in partnership with Arts in the Park, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the National Park Service.
