Description

Join Interpretek as we welcome Amber Galloway Gallego to Kansas City for this unique skills-building opportunity. Note: scroll for FAQs.

CEUs: 0.6 RID Professional Studies CEUs*
Audience: student through professional working interpreter, hearing or deaf

The purpose of this onsite workshop is to guide interpreters to understand the meaning of songs and demonstrating how to lyrically produce an interpretation using conceptual signs. This workshop will also discuss how to choose signs for certain songs, a variety of techniques to utilize, and model techniques to handle tough situations. The many controversial theories held by some in the community will be discussed. The presenter will divulge some great ideas to better facilitate the entire music interpreting process, debate the pros and cons of choices, and emphasize how a little rhythm can go a long way.

Participants will:

  • Observe and analyze successful modeling of music interpretations
  • Identify how to choose signs and poetic movement to faithfully convey the meaning, intent, and spirit of the songs and the artist's intent while maintaining the integrity of the signed language
  • Utilize several interpreters' recorded demonstrations to inform their own work
  • Analyze how sign language can fit the pace and rhythm of the music using body movements, conveying attitude of the song and distinguish changes in mood and characters
  • Apply all concepts learned to interpret a song

Interpretek is an approved RID sponsor for continuing education activities. This workshop has been approved for 0.6 Professional Studies CEUs and is designed for interpreter/interpreting student audiences with little or no prior knowledge of the subject. *Note: RID CEUs are accepted by both the Missouri and Kansas Commissions for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

FAQs

Who is Amber Galloway Gallego?

Check out Amber's bio.

I would like to register my staff interpreters in one order. Is that possible?

Yes, you may register up to 20 people in one order. When you register, you'll see there is a separate place for your info, the billing info, and for each participant's info.

Is there a limit on how many people can join this workshop?

Based on the flexibility of our meeting space on Saturday, is no limit for this workshop. (Note: we have reserved a smaller room for Friday's workshop, so that one is capped at 60 and is currently full. Join the waitlist.)

In what language will the workshop be presented? How do I request accommodations?

This workshop will be presented in ASL. FM systems will be available for up to 30 participants who would like a voiced translation. All music will be captioned for Deaf participants' access.

What is Knuckleheads Saloon?

Knuckleheads is Kansas City's premier venue for live music, including blues, rock and roll, country, folk, Americana, pop, and bluegrass. We thought it would make a great place to host given our workshop topics.

Knuckleheads is just north of downtown Kansas City in an industrial neighborhood in a sprawling collection of buildings. Friday's workshop will take place in The Gospel Lounge; Saturday's will take place in The Garage. We'll have signage and staff on hand to help you find us. Learn more at www.knuckleheadskc.com.

What is the eating situation?

We will take an hour break at lunch. You have the following choices:

  • Bring your own sack lunch
  • Order food from Knuckleheads (burgers, tacos, bar-style food) - you order and pay onsite
  • By April 14, order a boxed lunch for $10 from The Local Pig on the registration page*

No matter your dining choice, you may bring your food back to the event space to eat.

What are the options for the boxed lunch?

An optional boxed lunch was available for purchase through April 14. Instead, plan on purchasing food at Knuckleheads, bringing your own, or making a quick run (this option could be tricky - plan ahead).

I'm coming in from out of town. Where should I stay?

Check out www.visitkc.com for links to local hotels. We suggest searching near Downtown, the Country Club Plaza, and Crown Center. Since we anticipate most attendees will be local, we do not have a hotel designated with a room block.

What's the refund policy for registrations?

The opportunity for refunds ended on April 14.

How will I get more details about the event?

You will receive an auto-generated email from Eventbrite with a receipt of payment. Interpretek will email additional details in the week leading up to the event.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Email us at kc.office@interpretek.com anytime or call us during business hours at 816.246.8770 (toll free 866.372.1773). Messages left after hours will be returned the next business day.
