Event Details

The Colorado Legacy Foundation is offering two high-quality, interactive opportunities for professional development on April 16th, the day before the Healthy Schools Summit. These two pre-conference workshops are designed to bolster participant knowledge and planning in two critical areas of school health work: integrating health and wellness into school policies and systems and addressing the social, emotional needs of students.

There is no charge for these workshops and space is limited to 50 participants.

Take Action!  Review, Update and Strengthen Your Local Wellness Policy

Presenter:  Amy Dyett, Colorado Legacy Foundation

Time:  8:30am – 12:00pm

Breakfast will be served at 8:00am

Location:  Sheraton Downtown Denver, Silver Conference Room

School wellness staff and other school personnel can and should become experts on the school district policy process. Policy is important to codify, sustain and provide accountability for integrating wellness efforts into the school system. This workshop is designed to build capacity and knowledge of upcoming federal United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations and other legislation requiring schools and districts to update their Local Wellness Policy (LWP). We will examine recent and upcoming legislation, build the skills and tools needed to review, update and reflect model language and best practices in your LWP; as well as identify essential partners to involve in the process and tips to working effectively with  your board of education to codify best practice.

Who Should Attend:
Wellness Team Members in the Front Range area that will participate or have participated in a wellness policy review and/or revision/update. 2-4 people per school district wellness team (or school team if applicable). Suggested staff include  Wellness Coordinator, Nutritional Services Director/Manager, Superintendent or designated Administrator, School Board Member, teacher, parent, student, community partner, public health employee, etc.

Required Materials:
Participants must bring your most current School District (or school level if applicable) Wellness Policy (ADF Document). Please bring  copies for everyone from your organization that is attending.

About the Speaker:

Amy Dyett manages the portfolio of CLF’s Health and Wellness statewide Healthy School Districts grants and the Healthy School Champions Score Card recognition and assessment program. She coordinates the new professional learning community, conducts technical assistance and training sessions, and provides support as schools and school districts across the state work to enhance or create health and wellness initiatives in the areas of nutrition, physical activity, health education, employee wellness, and school health services in order to advance academic achievement.  Amy received her Bachelors of Science in Biological Sciences and BioMedical Sciences from Colorado State University and her Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of Northern Colorado.

The Heart-Mind Connection:  The Role of Emotion, Connectedness and the Adolescent Brain on School Success

Presenter:  Finessa Ferrell, Colorado Legacy Foundation

Time: 1:00-4:00

Lunch will be served from 12:00-1:00

Location: Sheraton Downtown Denver, Silver Conference Room

Research is increasingly clear that learning is not a passive act but an active one requiring the heart (affect) and mind (cognitive) to work together to assimilate, organize, apply and demonstrate knowledge.  For a multitude of reasons, traditional approaches to education, particularly in middle and high school,  have separated the affective from the cognitive, often prioritizing the latter and addressing affective needs primarily when behavior disrupts these cognitive priorities. This practice does not adequately recognize, nor utilize the facts: the developing adolescent is geared—by biological design—to be heavily influenced by emotional impulse rather than rational decision making. By looking more carefully at how the adolescent brain works, in combination with recent research on grit, academic mindsets, stress response, motivation, anxiety, and trauma we can begin to understand the fundamental misalignment between how we have traditionally structured student learning and how students actually become engaged in learning.

Who Should Attend:
This session focuses on students age 9-20 and is open to all adults and to mature youth (15+). A portion of session content does cover hormone production, impulse control and risk behaviors including sexual impulsivity, drugs and alcohol.

Required Materials:  None

About the Speaker:

Finessa Ferrell is the Director of Health and Wellness at the  Colorado Legacy Foundation, overseeing work in school climate change, equity, best practices in healthy schools, student behavioral health, healthy school indicators and social emotional learning. Before joining CLF, Ms. Ferrell led the National Center for School Engagement and the Colorado office of Homeless Youth Services; she worked as an evaluator for Search Institute, a policy analyst in school violence prevention for the National Conference of State Legislatures and a college professor.  Finessa’s career has focused on the intersection of social-emotional health, academic achievement and school safety and she has a substantial background in research and policy.  A graduate of the University of Oklahoma and the University of Wisconsin, Finessa holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in political science, communication arts, education policy and education administration.
