Description

The purpose of this class is to provide information about Healthy People 2020, and its objective pertaining to screen-time. Topics covered in the class will include:

  • What is Healthy People 2020, and why is it important?
  • What is screen-time, and why does it matter?
  • What is the American Academy of Pediatrics, and what is their position on screen-time?
  • Provide an overview of infant neurodevelopment, and how screen-time may impact it.
  • Explore whether media really can be educational.
  • Present strategies for promoting infant development.

There will also be time for group discussion about challenges participants have experienced with screen-time.

Upon completion of this class, participants will be able to make informed decisions about the use of screen-time in their homes.

About the Instructor: Joel Viles is a 2nd year Physician Assistant student at Oregon Health and Science University who recently wrote a paper about the prevalence of early media exposure in children, and it's potential developmental impacts. Joel has lived in Oregon his entire life, and hopes to work in Family Medicine upon graduation. His hobbies are writing, hiking, and watching movies.
