Healthy Aging @ Your Library: Connecting Older Adults to Health Information (1/2-day afternoon workshop for library and literacy staff and volunteers)
This hands-on “train the trainer” class is designed to help librarians assist their older adult patrons find health information. Discover techniques for teaching older adults to use computers and locate health information on the Internet. Learn what makes a website senior-friendly. This class will help you plan library programs on senior health topics as well as find recommended health websites for older adults.
- Learn about the reasons it is important to better assist older patrons
- Be able to evaluate health information resources based on usability issues that affect older adults
- Learn and practice techniques for teaching older adults how to look for health information on the Internet
- Be able to research health information for older adults using online resources from the National Institutes of Health and other recommended websites
There is no prerequisite for this class.
Brian Leaf, Emerging Technologies Coordinator at the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, South Central Region, will teach the class.
Travel stipend for overnight stay may be available if you take this afternoon class and the morning class Beyond An Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information @ Your Library. You also must be with a public library, library system, tribal library or literacy organization which is 60 miles or more from ODL to qualify for a travel stipend. Initial travel stipend paperwork must be returned to ODL before the class date. Contact Doris Dixon to request paperwork via email Doris.Dixon@libraries.ok.gov or phone (405) 522-3217. Stipend will be based on lodging receipt, up to $92. If lodging charges are less than $92, the contract will be written for the actual amount, not $92. Mileage also may be reimbursed at 30 cents/mile if you are paying for your own gas & cannot collect from your library/literacy organization. Stipend contracts will be made out to the library/literacy organization. It will be your responsibility to collect your reimbursement from such organization. No travel stipend contracts will be paid until the class has been attended and photocopied proof of overnight stay (if applicable) has been submitted to the Office of Library Development.
