Wednesday, October 25, 2017: Health Literacy Skill-Building Workshops

Participants will choose only 1 of these 4 hands-on options:

  • Plain language (1:00-4:00pm)
Communication – be it verbal or written - that is long, convoluted, and full of jargon is hard to understand and use, which means it can prevent people from getting the care they need. We'll teach you how to write and speak what you mean in ways that most people will understand and use. You'll learn how to use language that is clear and concise so your patient materials are more likely to help people.

  • Design your own health education materials (1:00-4:00 pm)
People are less likely to connect with your health information if it doesn't look good. A little bit of design can go a long way in engaging your patients and communities. The good news is that content creators don't need an expensive graphic design program. Learn how to use Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to create good-looking, health-literate materials.

  • Strategies for blending health literacy into community activities (1:00-4:00pm)
Building directly upon the recent National Academy of Medicine’s Roundtable on Health Literacy Community-based interventions workshop that featured the work of Health Literacy Media, this workshop will introduce participants to a broad range of community-based health literacy interventions that currently exist, research related to community-based health literacy interventions, and best practices in community-based health literacy interventions.

  • Creating inclusive healthcare environments (11:00am-4:00pm)
Let’s take a look at power in health care. In this workshop, we’ll consider how bias and privilege play out in current healthcare cultures, environments, and practices, including who benefits and who’s marginalized – and what can be done about that situation. We'll focus on how to connect social justice theory with health literacy and cultural competency practices to develop healthcare environments that value diversity and inclusion.

Continuing Education:

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

We've applied for approval to offer CEUs for Missouri social workers, and Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) who attend the summit, a workshop, or both. Please check back soon for updates!
