Description
The ICRC and Australian Red Cross invite you to a panel discussion on ways to improve security and delivery of health care in armed conflict and other emergencies.
The sick and wounded have the right to access medical care even during war and conflict, but too frequently, people’s lives are jeopardised by violence against health care. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s Health Care in Danger project, led by the ICRC, has identified many forms of obstructions to health care: threats to doctors’ lives, ambulances held up at checkpoints, medical workers injured or killed in crossfire, medical supply shipments blocked, and hospitals ransacked of medicines.
Join us to hear from Dr Bruce Eshaya-Chauvin, Medical Advisor to the Health Care in Danger project in Geneva, Switzerland; Mr Paul McPhun, Executive Director of Médecins Sans Frontières - Australia; and Dr Sarah Miller, a Canberra-based clinical and forensic psychologist with international experience as a delegate for the Movement. They will outline the efforts made by the Movement, MSF, and individual healthcare workers to safeguard health care, and discuss the way forward for better protecting health care in times of war and other emergencies.
The event also marks the global launch of the HCiD project's latest report: Promoting military operational practice that ensures safe access to and delivery of health care.
Light refreshments will be served immediately following the event.
