Event description

Description

-- We all have a relationship to our voice. What's the story of your voice? When have you felt fully expressed? When have you not? We invite you to listen to healing vocal stories, reflect on the story of your own voice, and join in using our voices together. The session will include stories from Tom McSteen and Barbara McAfee, community singing, and personal reflection about your own vocal story.

The event is organized by Health Story Collaborative, a nonprofit that hosts stories of illness, challenge, and healing, based on research about the healing power of stories, for both listeners and those telling stories. Hanna Cooper and Michael Bischoff, from Health Story Collaborative, will facilitate the session.

donations to cover the event costs, and support access to healing stories, will be gratefully accepted.

Tom McSteen's healing story begins as a child, struggling to speak and to be liked in the face of a severe stutter. The pain and trauma of those experiences formed as a "chronic unhappiness" that was rooted and stuck deep within. Now, after many transformative healing experiences, including vocal, somatic, and indigenous medicinal healing,Tom knows his greatest wound to be his greatest gift. Distinguishing speech from voice, Tom's story is one of finding voice within, and then learning how to be fully expressed in the world. Today, Tom speaks from his reclaimed voice via Sacred Discourse, a heart-centered approach to cultivating conversations and dialogue across any type of conflict or divide.Tom is a 2016 graduate of the Full Voice Coach Certification program and is now Barbara's apprentice teacher.

Barbara McAfee is a “midwife for voices,” supporting people from all walks of life in finding their voice, whatever that means to them. Her work is sourced in her own vocal healing journey. Though she sang in choirs growing up, singing alone in public was her greatest fear. The fact that she does so now – with ease and joy – is a testimony to the many teachers, guides, and allies who invited her into full expression. She developed The Five Elements Framework™, a tool for unleashing the power and flexibility in the voice, in speaking and singing alike. The framework is at the heart of her book, Full Voice: The Art and Practice of Vocal Presence. Barbara is now training others to carry the work through her Full Voice Coach Training Certification program.
