The last two years I have been studying a new methodology that has been a ‘game changer’ for me as a counselor. I started a specialized training called ‘Somatic Experiencing’. I was amazed at how it is able to get to trauma that is stored in the body. That was a new concept for me, and ever since I have seen greater release and healing in people’s lives. I want to share some of this with you!
What I love about this approach is the efficiency of it. Most approaches involve having to talk and tell the trauma story which involves the mind. But as we know, the mind will make us stories to explain things (VLE) while the body tells the truth (van der Kolk). So when you work directly with the body, you can get to the root much faster and resolve it more completely through resetting the nervous system back to a place of safety. This is helpful for people who don’t always have words or clear memory. Many prefer this method to just talking. Lisa and I both have experienced this in our own lives and have loved the results.
The Somatic Experiencing® (SE) method is a body-oriented approach to the healing of trauma and other stress disorders. It is the life’s work of Dr. Peter A. Levine, resulting from his multidisciplinary study of stress physiology, psychology, ethology, biology, neuroscience … etc. The SE approach releases traumatic shock, which is key to transforming PTSD and the wounds of emotional and early developmental attachment trauma. While SE is not presented as a Christian approach, we have combined it with prayer (like the Immanuel process) and seen the Lord really break through.

THE SE APPROACH
Somatic Experiencing, or SE® for short, is a method of releasing stress and trauma that gets “stuck” in the body. SE utilizes the latest research on the connection between the brain and the body. When we become stressed by an overwhelming life event, a traumatic incident, or a mentally tough situation, our brains tell our bodies to either run, fight, or freeze, otherwise known as flight / fight / freeze. This model offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight or freeze responses and provides tools to resolve these fixated physiological states. It provides effective skills appropriate to a variety of healing professions including mental health, medicine, physical and occupational therapies, bodywork, addiction treatment, first response, education, helpers, pastoral staff and others.
HOW IT WORKS
The SE approach facilitates the completion of self-protective motor responses and the release of thwarted survival energy bound in the body, thus addressing the root cause of trauma symptoms. This is approached by gently guiding clients to develop increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions.. This will be a brief introduction to the SE Model and concepts
WHY IT WORKS
During the stress of a traumatic event such as a car accident or physical or mental abuse, our brains tell our bodies to run, fight, or freeze.
Even in the stress of a big test, sleeplessness, or just friends who are not being nice, our bodies go through a stress response similar to being chased in the wild. When the brain sends a message to run or fight, all the blood rushes from our brains to our extremities so we can escape danger. But since running or fighting doesn’t make logical sense to us, we stifle all of that energy, and it gets trapped inside the body.
We know that trauma is physiological energy, a sort of cloud of trapped energy inside of us, that can cause all kinds of symptoms.
