Event description

Description

Shame at the root of most family disruption. Shame is the feeling that we are flawed or worthless and unworthy of being loved. When someone is in shame, they have great difficulty feeling loved. This workshop will help parents, foster parents, adoptive parents, and teens, as well as therapists understand this powerful and mysterious emotion and how to begin to heal it.

Participants in this Healing Shame Continuing Education program will benefit from the many years of “in the trenches" experience of the teachers- one of whom is an MFT therapist, the other who is an educator and coach- in putting theory and research into actual practice

The Presenters:

Sheila Rubin worked for years as a counselor with runaway kids, foster parents, and families at an agency in Portland, Oregon. In the Bay Area, she has developed Drama Therapy and storytelling group processes for kids at Head start and teenagers in hospitals and schools to help them cope with shyness, bullying, and low self-esteem. Sheila Rubin and Bret Lyon are a married couple who have been leading Healing Shame trainings for foster and adoptive families, as well as leading Healing Shame workshops for therapists, staff and support staff, in many cities in the US and Canada. Their 3-part video series for foster families will be available online.

Course Goals:

  • Recognize and work with negative self-talk and acting out
  • Create a counter-shaming environment, recognize, and step out of the seemingly endless shame spiral.
  • Find ways beyond the feelings of doubt, not belonging, and perfectionism.
  • Separate shame from other emotions.
  • Use storytelling, drama therapy games, role-play, healing ritual, somatic processes, and more to unpack the shame, work through it and restore the interpersonal bridge between parent and child.
